This post is a personal one but one I’m sure a lot of people can relate to. Anxiety is something I’m sure everyone will deal with at one point in their life. It’s something that I didn’t know much about or was ever taught about growing up. I just had to realise it was happening to me, be aware of the symptoms and work through it. Growing up you’re told to work hard at school, get good grade’s, get a good job, a partner and start a family. But what if that doesn’t work out how society told you too, what do you do then? What if anxiety get’s in the way or forces you to put things on hold?
That’s how anxiety feels like for me, this was not how it was supposed to be so what do I do now? When I first started to experience it, I would have mini panic attacks on the bus to college or on the tube. My heart would start thumping and I would become hot and flustered, my mind rushing over a million variables of what could happen when I get off the train. It would affect my day to day life and I couldn’t wait to get back inside the house to finally chill out.
My anxiety became a lot worse while I was auditioning in musical theatre. Before every audition, I would have mini panic attacks, sort myself out in the toilet then go in. I became a pro at sorting myself out before an audition situation. So I would like to share some of those tips with you. Now I’m not a health professional and I’m not an expert. I’m neither claiming to be. I’m simply sharing my symptoms and how I tried to combat them.
How to recognise the signs with anxiety
So anxiety can come in many forms and it can be pretty frustrating unless you know what it is. Iv found myself not wanting to leave the house or be around social situations. This would upset me because I didn’t know what was wrong. As soon as I started to recognise the signs It helped me understand what was happening and how to get through it.
- Excessive worrying
Worrying about the most ridiculous scenarios and stressing over something that has not happened yet. Very common in actors while auditioning. Stressing over the outcome before it happened. Worrying about people’s opinions or thing’s that haven’t happened yet. I used to think I was just a worried person. But as that increased, I realised It was not normal. When worrying about something makes it difficult to concentrate, you should be aware that may be anxiety.
Getting irritated and annoyed easily. Trying to push your anxiety elsewhere. Ask yourself why?
Feeling sluggish and tired even after a long sleep. Unmotivated and weak.
- Tense/sore muscles
I find that my body aches after a stressful time. Almost like anxiety tenses my whole body and muscles.
- Trouble sleeping
Can’t switch off, lay restless watching the clock. Your mind won’t switch off to rest.
- Lack of focus
Procrastination or trying to focus on too many things at once. Notice this and try and focus on one thing
- Irrational Fears
Fear’s of being hit by a car or bite by a dog. Constant worrying and stress through everyday life.
Natural Ways to reduce anxiety
- Reduce caffeine
- Meditation (switching off your phone)
- Writing a journal/diary
When to Seek Professional Help
I think overall If you feel like your not able to control your anxiety and it is getting worse. Or certain situations in life make it worse I would seek professional help. You may need to try different options to help control your anxiety depending on what works for you personally. Speak to your doctor or GP who will advise you further.
